Track Surveying

Railroad construction is always based on accurate survey data. We build surveying control networks for railroad construction and perform track maintenance and construction surveys nationwide.

Surveying control network plays a central role in rail traffic surveys. Long line-like objects and small tolerances require that the baseline points are solidly built, accurately surveyed, and carefully documented. Our long experience in building surveying control networks for track surveying needs ensures a successful outcome. We are naturally very familiar with railroad-related safety issues.

Track Geometry Maintenance Surveying
Support works in order to maintain the track’s geometrical condition are performed continuously to ensure the good condition, flow and safety of the railroad. Before the support works, track geometry surveying is needed. We perform the surveying with extensive experience and according to all requirements.

Track Renovation and Construction Surveying
We also carry out different kinds of surveying needed for track repair and construction work. These include stake-out or control surveying of various structures, surveying needed during the installation of railway switches as well as surveying of e.g. train scales, block changes, bridges and special structures.

MACHINE CONTROL

3D Machine Control refers to a system installed on earthworks machinery that guides both the machine and the operator. A machine control system makes the operator’s work easier and contributes to successful work performance. Machine control can be integrated into the machine's hydraulic system for fully automatic operation.
Machine control can be utilized in different types of machines and work tasks. Blueprints by the site’s designer are uploaded into the machine control system, after which the system sensors guide the machine operator through a display inside the cockpit. Positional information on the machine is obtained either using a tachymeter or GPS.

Modeling
With 3D machine control, objects from blueprints are not marked in the terrain; the design is uploaded directly into the machine control system computer. Therefore, it is highly important that objects are modeled accurately and only relevant information about the site is entered into the machine control system.

In some cases, the baseline data can exist on paper only, which requires digitizing the material for modeling. Mitta models the site's structural layers, linear objects such as pipes and wires as well as point objects to correct coordinate system and file format.

Site Services
Establishing a construction site is one of the most important phases for the success of a project. Correct coordinate system, system accuracy, uploading data to systems, and site personnel training are all issues that need to be mastered before starting work on the site.

Mitta's highly skilled staff handles all aspects of a machine control project for our customers, including site services.

LASER SCANNING

Laser scanning produces an accurate point cloud of a site or area without physically touching or entering the it. It is an efficient, highly accurate and also cost-efficient way to produce surveying data on massive construction or planning sites.

The scanner sends up to millions of laser pulses per second. The position of one point is measured in relation to the other points of the point cloud, allowing its accuracy to be determined in millimeters. The point cloud can be located in the local geographic information system or it can also be linked to other existing coordinate systems.

Laser scanning allows large amounts of data to be collected quickly. Not all information needs to be put to use immediately; it can be archived and returned to as needed without accessing the site. In addition, target areas (such as roads and railways) do not need to be closed for long periods due to surveying.

The point cloud generated can be treated as a separate product, or it can be embedded in design programs (e.g. CAD) as part of a larger whole.

Photos and Laser Scanning
With modern laser scanners, photographic information can be combined with the survey data, strengthening the realistic and illustrative nature of the point cloud. This allows using the point cloud as such for a number of purposes requiring visuality.

In addition, a 3D virtual environment can be quickly and easily generated from the point cloud, which allows customers to quickly perform simple surveys by, for example, using Leica TrueView ™ software.

Industrial Surveying

We provide surveying services for all mechanical engineering and industrial needs, both for individual equipment pieces and large assemblies. Our measuring equipment includes e.g. a LaserTracker with a measurement accuracy of up to +/- 0.010 mm.

In installation and quality assurance surveying for steel structures, we specialize in large objects with extensive, more than 20 years of experience.

Furnace Surveying
Based on our 20 years of experience, we carry out surveying of caustic lime, cement, lime and expanded clay furnaces. Measurements can focus on, for example, straightness, bed deflections or tire and roller wear. We also carry out surveying done during production downtime, including corrections, adjustments, and fillings.

Mechanical Engineering and Paper Mill Industry Surveying
Based on our 20 years of experience, we perform various forms of surveying for mechanical engineering and paper mill industries. Our services range from roll alignment, frame structure, and baseboard surveying to large machinery and steel structure surveying.

Bridge Load Testing

The load bearing capacity of a bridge must correspond to the new vehicle regulations or a weight limit sign has to be installed. Mitta measures the real load bearing capacity of your bridge in cooperation with bridge designers.

The loading test is carried out by measuring strain, deflection, sag and displacement in bridge girders and other structural parts, using a known truck weight as a load. Using the measurement results along with the bridge’s computational model, the result will be a reliable view of the bridge’s load bearing capacity.

The loading test is carried out within one working day and includes static and dynamic load stages in accordance with the bridge-specific plan. The test load vehicle may be, for example, a full trailer truck loaded with gravel or timber, or if necessary, a vehicle crane or tray truck, whose load is changed in stages.

The loading test can also be performed for railway bridges by using normal railway transport as load, e.g. heavy freight trains.

UAS and Photogrammetric Surveying

UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) is an unmanned aerial vehicle system that can be used to easily and effortlessly photograph objects from the air. The electric-motor operated automatic unmanned aircraft, ie. a drone is nearly silent and a safe method for aerial photography. As the flight altitude is 100-150 meters, the UAS flies in free airspace and operating one does not require a separate flight permit.

A typical subject is a 10-300 hectare area of which a scale-precise orthomosaic and a DSM point cloud are generated. The point cloud can be used to form a surface model for design or volume calculation purposes, for example. The accuracy of the UAS method corresponds to the tolerances of conventional aerial photography. The point clouds are attached to the coordinate system using signal points placed inside the flight area.

Property Inventory Surveying
Unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, are an effective way to collect surveying data from all kinds of land-based objects, for example rock, soil, peat or recycled material stocks. The data collected by the drone is refined into a surface model, which when compared to a reference surface, can be used to determine the volume of change.

UAS surveying can always be complemented with alternative methods such as laser scanning or conventional spot surveying.

Monitoring Services

Monitoring, i.e. a continuous control of movement, is a secure and cost-effective way to control structural movement. It has various applications, and monitoring can be either temporary or long-term. Temporary movement control can be utilized in sensitive environments during blasting, quarrying and piling work, for example. Long-term monitoring is needed in various structures where safety is a key concern, such as bridges, highways and railways, tunnels, channels, buildings, and nuclear and power plants.

We utilize the best measurement equipment in the market such as total stations, GNSS receivers and digital leveller, which can be easily be equipped with various meteorological and geotechnical sensors. In addition to controlling movement, monitoring can also be applied for controlling states of structural load by using, for example, fiber optic based FBG strain and temperature sensors.

Municipal Services

We provide municipalities not only comprehensive surveying services, but also various other measurement and study services. These include wiring maps, drafting and updating of ground plans, surveying of trunk-line networks, public utility surveying, planning surveying, marking zoning plans on the terrain, field works in real estate deliveries, street area takeovers and construction supervision surveying.

We also provide services related to land plot division, land acquisition support, plot zone pricing, land use planning consultancy, land policy consultancy and process benchmarking.

Estate Owner Services

We carry out surveys and studies related to property ownership, such as private road unit calculations, spatial data analysis, title deeds and e-real estate assistance. We also assist and represent our clients in registering matters and land surveying deliveries as needed.

Our services also include property consultancy, valuation and boundary line displays.

Underwater Surveying

We perform various different types of underwater surveying for our customers. Our services include, for example, depth measurements of sea areas, lakes and running waters; classification of seabed or other bottom material (gravel, sand, clay, etc.); and searching for objects underwater (water pipelines, cables, lost objects).

A three-dimensional model can be created of underwater areas and shores for waterway or other water system planning.

Multibeam Sonar Surveying
Sonar surveying an be performed at sea, inland waters or running waters. The results can be presented either digitally or as print maps, and they can also be used for mass calculations. GeoSwath Plus, an oblique interferometric system, is used as equipment of side scanning.

Sonar surveying is performed to measure water depth and/or to survey sediment layers in the bottom (eg. line-gauging along a determined line, or sonar covering the entire bottom). Sonar is also an effective way to retrieve lost objects or cables from the bottom.

Bar Sweeping
The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency has authorized Mitta to carry out control bar sweeping surveying. As a positioning method, RTK GPS or DGPS is be used. The sweepings result in the protocols and maps that are submitted to the maritime authority for registration. We have three different sizes of sweeping equipment at our disposal.

Sub-Bottom Profiling and Coast Scanning
Our wide-angle sonar equipment enables us to produce continuous point data from sub-bottom profiling. Objects can be detected from the data, giving them a three-dimensional position. With the surveying equipment we use, it is possible to operate also in shallow waters and close to the shoreline.

At the same time as underwater surveying, we can use laser scanning equipment installed in a boat to map the shore (e.g. water banks and sandbanks). Using the combined method of sonar mapping and laser scanning, the data from the two techniques can be combined with only a small gap in between.

Discharge Measurements
Discharge measurements produce accurate discharge cross-sections of water systems. In addition to the total discharge information, it is possible to determine flow rates and directions for the entire area. The data can be utilized for various environmental modeling and flow monitoring purposes, for example.

Ice Cover and Frazil Ice Measurement
Ice cover thickness and the amount of frazil ice accumulating under the ice are measured using modern ground radar.

Boat Channel Maintenance
Mitta provides boat channel management for its customers. The service includes the inspection and monitoring surveying of both fixed and floating channel equipment, as well as maintenance, repair and installation work mainly in inland water areas.

Port Survey
Our compact and highly accurate sonar equipment is extremely well suited for port surveying applications that require producing high-quality data in confined spaces.

Real Estate Surveying

Based on old drawings and measurements, new digital drawings of floor plans can be created. Based on data, cross section, facade and property drawings are also possible. Indoors, laser rangefinders are used. Total station and laser scanners enable altitude and outdoor measurements.

Our services include:

  • Laser scanning (background data for information modeling)
  • Height measurement of building floor heights and other levels, façade surveying, positioning a building in a city/municipal coordinate system, reference lines in new construction (piles, lines, pipes) (tachymeter)
  • Photographic documentation of buildings (commercial or other purposes)
  • Archiving digital building drawings and maintaining the archive
  • 3D modeling of buildings and premises

Property Modeling
In parcel modeling, site boundaries, elevations, necessary connections to the environment and technical systems, vegetation and boundaries of various materials on the site, as well as e.g. play equipment are presented. The model can also include the positions of border points and other legally or technically significant points, such as wells or cables.

If necessary, the model can also include neighborhood buildings and street areas to the appropriate extent.

Inventory Model
An inventory model can be created from the survey data model, which can be saved as an IFC open data transfer model. Materials can be produced in AutoCAD, Revit or ArchiCAD environments.

Inventory models correspond to the “General Data Model Requirements” guidelines. The image plane system we use is documented in data model description.

Certified Surface Area Surveying
For real estate transaction purposes, the surface area of residential and commercial premises can also be surveyed. The surface area survey document is an official certified document that can be attached to real estate transactions.

With the ZEB-Revo GeoSlam handheld scanner we use, an apartment surface area can be quickly measured with a tolerance of 0.5 m². Surface area is reported in accordance with RT 12-11055 specification.

Digitizing Services
Our Real Estate Surveying Department also serves the needs of architect and engineering companies. We use the latest AutoCAD, ArchiCAD and Revit software for both 2D drawing and 3D modeling. Our skilled staff is made up of construction engineers, technical assistants as well as various other real estate professionals.
